Project 3

Project three is the biggest project I have ever been given. It includes: a tri-fold poster board that maps the digital me, a 2-3 page paper, a 5 minute presentation, a web-site and a power point. I am usually a huge procrastinator so lately I have been working really hard to get this done early. So far I have finished my website, half of my power point and mapped my paper and tri-fold. I still have a lot to do but I'm happy with my results thus far. So check out my website and tell me what you think.

There are many ways in which you can increase the value of your composition by breaking down one sentence at a time. Utilizing sentence variety by creating different combinations for the placement of subjects, verbs, and objects will definitely enhance you writing. Employing conjunctive-FANBOYS and introductory words, economic-reducing redundancy, and stacked-prioritized/ concentrated ideas you will be a better writer through clear, without redundancy, certain with authority, and your diction and syntax are sophisicated. Exercising just a few of these ideas will put you the mind set of becoming a better writer. It is crucial that your audience understands clearly the message your're presenting. Afterall, they will create your exchange rate for you.

Thursdays Class

English 106 is a required class at Purdue University and its purpose is to sharpen the writing skills of freshmen. We have been given a lot of tools to improve our writing in this class, but the one I obtained in class on Thursday is my favorite. Thursday we learned about diction and how to improve our sentence variety. The tool we were given for sentence variety was SVO, VSO and OVS. This tool shows you how to organize your sentence so that your subject, verb and object align correctly. The basic format for a sentence is SVO; Sara tossed the ball. Another way of writing that sentence would be OVS; the ball was tossed by Sara. I really like this tool because it gives you more than one way to write a sentence while saying the same thing. Another writing tool we were given was FANBOYS and its purpose is to help you decide when a comma is needed. This tool will benefit me because I sometimes have trouble using commas.

Spooning- When a couple lays back to front in an affectionate mannor; resembling the stacking of spoons. When I first heard this word I thought it was something kinky but it really isn’t. This website is great because it gives you many diverse meanings and lets you see how others define your favorite words.

In my English 106 class we were given a paragraph that was completely mixed up and we were told to put it in order using the information we obtained in class. So here it is...

A computer analysis of five million words in context revealed many subtle and not-so-subtle clues to the status of women in American society. In general, the pronuons he, him, and his outnumber she, her, and hers by a ratio of four to one. Not only are women put off, they are also put down, numerically and otherwise. In the real world, women slightly outnumber men. In an article describing the preperation of a dictionary for schoolchildren, Alma Graham recounts the imbalance discovered in schoolbooks in all subjects in use in the early 1970's. The numbers alone tell us a lot: men outnumber women seven to one, boys outnumber girls two to one; girls are even in the minority in home economics books, where masculine pronouns outnumber feminine ones two to one. But the world created for American schoolchildren presents a different picture.

On Monday in the lab we learned about typography and how it is used. Mary showed us that the font you use can say as much as the words themselves. She explained that how you would write an invitation for a children birthday would be completely differnt from the way you would write to your boss. The difference between the two is clear, when talking about something cheerful you should use a font that is rounded and bright but when talking about something formal you should use something thin, pointy, and dark. She also showed us how to do cool things with words such as make them disappear or just write them in a way that is easy to see what they mean, for example bet(in)ween.

Thursday's Speaker

I thought we had a great speaker in our English 106 class on Thursday. His name was Dr. French and he teaches here at Purdue. He talked about the importance of writing in the business world. I enjoyed him because he had many interesting stories. He spoke about how the head of a company came in and fired the whole factory because they were not producing what the customer wanted. Another interesting story was the one about when someone shipped him two cars and was told him to find out what was wrong with them. He later found out that the problem was that the cars made a rattling noise but that was only after years of driving them. The speaker also has great taste in books, he likes the book One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. The most important thing I got out of it was to become a better writer you have to read. Reading is the one thing I hate to do but I want to become a better writer so it looks like I have to pick up a book.

Writing in the Workforce

The ability to express oneself clearly, rationally, and convincingly on paper opens the door for individual opportunities in the United States. Harnessing the ability to write in the professional world enables you to obtain a good job. This is because employers look for those who have good writing skills to fill the jobs that offer high pay and require a lot of skill. Those who display good writing skills prove to their employers that they are capable of thinking on the appropriate level. Many companies say that an individual can not move up without acceptable writing skills.

My First College Paper

My first college paper was about a non profit of my choice and how they compose themself trough writing. I picked the Indiana Black Expo. One thing I learned about while writing this paper was that I should never wait until 3 days before the paper is due to start on it. I enjoyed writing this paper because it gave me a chance to investigate the Indiana Black Expo and see all the things they do behind the scenes.

In Friedman’s book The World is Flat he listed ten flatteners. Those are the things which he believes has flattened the world. The first flattener took place November 11, 1989, that is when the Berlin Wall fell. The Berlin wall was known as the Iron Curtain, its purpose was to keep the East Germans from seeing freedom. They had could not experience freedom because their lives were run by communism. That meant the government controlled almost every aspect of their lives. All of them were in poverty and had no way of bettering themselves. Six months after the wall went down Americans started to realize that if they just bought a computer and a dial-up modem then they could send emails to others through providers such as AOL and CompuServe. The reason why Friedman believes that Windows contributed to the fall of the wall was because computers introduced horizontal communication and communism was based upon top-down communication. Friedman also talks about how Osama bin Laden's views changed after the wall fell; he began to see the United States as his new enemy. In the end America and the rest of the world was celebrating 11/9/1989 and Osama began planning 9/11/2001.

Hoping for October!!

The month of September has to have been one of the worst months of my life. It seems as though just when I started to get used to being in college everything starts falling apart. I learned the hard way that when a teacher says read something they really mean for you to read it. I found that out the first time I went to my English 106 class and I was not prepared. The biggest adjustment I have had to make was learning how to focus on school and study. This is foreign to me because I was used to doing the bare minimum in high school and getting decent grades. Now that I am at Purdue I have to work three times as hard. I am not really complaining about that because I know this is preparing me for the real world. The worst thing I have experienced so far has been heartbreak and sorrow, me and my boyfriend of 10 months just broke up and I feel as if my world has fallen apart. I know I will get over this because many people have, and what’s meant to be will be. So here I am learning from my mistakes, mending a broken heart, and praying that October will be a much better month.

Today in my English 106 class I found a new way to express myself. We are designing webpages and I really like this because it lets me compose myself in a new way. The thing I like best is it enables me to go above and beyond what is called for so that whoever views my page gets a better glimpse of me. So far I have used word art for my name and I have changed the color of my buttons. The hardest thing thus far was picking a color. This was hard for me because I am a very colorful person but at the same time my page has to display the professional side of me. I can not wait to finish my webpage.

Hurrican Rita

Just as those who had evcuated New Orleans got settled in the Houston area a new hurricane hits land, Rita. There are thousands of people in Reliant Stadium and the Astro Dome. The shelters where evacuated and some of the Katrina survivors were put on planes and sent to Arkansas. Houston has over 2 million residents and if Rita was as bad as Katrina only one million of them would be able to evacuate. I think its great that companys like Greyhound and Continental Airlines offer free tickets to evacuees.

Can My Parents Understand Whats Going On In My Education Today?

Can my parents understand what is going on in my education, yes and no. My parents have always done a good job in bridging the generational gap. They really understand what I am going through and they always look for ways to give words of encouragement and show they care. My parents can relate because they went through the same things when they started college. Although that was many years ago their workload was just as challenging as mine. One reason why my parents may not be able to relate is because a lot of the things I am doing are on the computer. My parents are very computer literate but there are some things that they do not know how to do. Of all the people in my family my brother and my sister relate to me the best. My brother graduated from Purdue in 2002 and my sister is going to graduate from IUPUI in May. To them, college seems like it was just the other day, which is why they can relate the best. Almost everything you have ever learned about the computer and the internet you learned at school. This is why I believe that if you are out of school too long and you do not stay current you will become obsolete. My parents are not obsolete but they probably will be in a few years that is why its good to have younger people who can also relate to you.

4 kinds of writing paragraph

The four worlds of writing are shown in the book "The World is Flat" because he talks about and shows professional and academic writing. He uses professional writing becuase it is a professional piece of work. The book is about the 21st century and how everything has turned computerized and how everything has been outsourced to India. Everyone knows that the world is round but the author says the world is flat because with the way technology is advancing they have "leveled the playing field". They have flattened the world by making it less difficult to reach people on the other side on the world. The book is mostly writtin in the public type of writing because it was writtin for the public to read. It also falls into the personal category because it is someones personal view. Lastly, falls into the academic category because it is for others to learn from.

It was really funny, I woke up thinking that it was just an ordinary day. I later looked at my cell phone and saw that today was September 11, 2005. I quickly realized why today was so special and I suddenly felt bad. How could I forget the day that changed every Americans life in one way or another?! September 11, 2001 was the day when every American realized that they are not untouchable. Every time I heard the word war I immediately thought of some country in the Middle East, I would have never imagined that the words "war" or "terrorism attack" would ever be used to describe something that had happened on my country's soil. September 11, 2001 remains the day that every American should never forget, it was the day that changed our nation, it made us fearful, filled our hearts with sorrow, and most importantly it made us prayerful!

Earlier this week a famous rapper was doing a Red Cross benefit on NBC and in the middle he decided to stop reading the teleprompter and say what was really on his mind."GEORGE BUSH DOES NOT CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE" I feel that a few of the things he said were very true, he spoke about how some soldiers have been called back to the US to enforce order in Louisiana or in other words shoot us. They are shooting and killing us for looting and taking food. What would you do if you had no other way to eat, did not know where your next meal was coming from and did not think you would be rescued? This is just my opinion, I am not bashing George Bush but I do feel that he was slow to react. Someone raised a very good point, why was it when one person who was a vegetable was starving Bush wasted no time to sign a bill to help her but when thousands of blacks and impoverished people are dying Bush takes a few extra days to respond? I feel what Kanye West did was very brave, he was on TV to get the peoples attention and that is exactly what he did. He said what needed to be said and the reaction was great, people opened their eyes and gave to the cause!

Nonprofit Organizations

In order to start project one I figured I should find out for sure what a nonprofit organization is. I thought a nonprofit organization was one that did not carry money over from year to year but instead they gave it back to the community. A nonprofit organization is a business that's only purpose is to help others, it is tax exempt, and it doesn't not accumulate money. Now that I know what a nonprofit organization does I think I have a better idea of which one I am going to choose. I am looking at the Indiana Black Expo.

Facebook Me!!!

Have you ever been on the FaceBook?! It is the greatest website for college students! I have been at Purdue for 3 weeks and already it has helped me find clubs to join, make few friends, find people who are in my classes, and help me keep track of those who graduated with me and went to other schools. I have heard some people call the Facebook the devil because it is very addictive and you can find out a lot of things about a lot of people. While the Facebook my seem like tons of fun you must be careful with it, as I said it is very addictive and it will make you stay up and extra hour or so each night, or be late to class/work. So in the end whether its poking, sending messages or finding out what "random play" means the Facebook is something every college student needs.
Oh, by the way, everyone needs to Facebook me!

The United States Constitution, the 17th Amendment

One Amendment in the United States Constitution that sticks out to me is the 17th. It says "The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax." (the Legal Information Institution)
In the south around the 1960's it was common that a black or poor person would be charged a poll tax as a means to keep them from voting. This was because the white politians who made the rules believed that only the opinions and the votes from the wealthy whites should be taken into consideration. Congress saw need for an alteration of the voting sytem and on August 27, 1962 they proposed a bill to change it. Almost two years later the states ratified it. I believe the right to vote should be ubicquidos world wide, everyone deserves the right to select their leader and feel as though their voice is being heard.

Me as a Writer

I am an informative writer and I write about issues that impact my life. For example, my senior paper was about Abstinence Education among teens. My senior paper led me to grow as a writer because it caused me to do extensive research. I like to write about issues that are real to teens today. I am also a creative writer, I enjoy writing short stories and short creative essays. One of the things I struggle with as a writer are poems, I am not very good at making things rhyme and following a certain pattern.
